The Stevenson hockey program has supported the Christopher Steele Foundation for several years. Christopher Steele attended Stevenson High School and participated on both the hockey and baseball teams. Chris was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in 2004 at the age of 21. He passed away at the young age of 23 in 2006. The Foundation, which was started by Chris’ family and friends, raises money that supports both cancer research and cancer patients and their families. To date, the Foundation has donated $72,500.00 to the Northwestern Memorial Foundation. Donations have also been made to Lurie Children's Hospital to set up a lounge for teenage patients and to Jill's House, a temporary home-like residence for patients undergoing outpatient therapy at the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute in Bloomington, IN.
I have included the registration information in an two page attachment. The registration form must be filled out, and if your son is under the age of 18, a parent must sign the waiver. The Stevenson Hockey Association has paid for registration fees.
The second page of the attachment includes a sponsorship form. In past years, we have had a bit more time between when the teams were announced and the day of the race for the boys to get sponsors to raise money for the Christopher Steele Foundation. Unfortunately, this year we have only seven days. The foundation has contributed to many wonderful projects assisting cancer patients and their families. This year, because of the time frame, I’m asking you to encourage your sons to call relatives, neighbors, family and workplace friends, etc. and try to get a few pledges to support this charity. Last year our hockey teams raised close to $3800.00. It would be great if the teams could exceed that amount this year.
I would appreciate if you could email me with your son’s T-shirt size by Sunday morning, as the boys will be provided with shirts and relay numbers for the race. I will hand them out at practices this week.
-The Christopher Steele Race will be held rain or shine on Saturday, September 7th.
-The boys are to check in between 7:30-7:45 am. at the north side of the parking lot of Kildeer Countryside School in Long Grove.
-They are to have their registration form filled out with the waiver signed.
-The sponsorship sheet should be filled out. Pledges will be collected the day of the race. All donations are tax deductable.
-A pancake breakfast will be provided for the boys following the race.
Again, the Christopher Steele Foundation is very close to our hearts. Not only is the hockey team supporting the organization, but it has also been chosen this year by Stevenson High School to receive all proceeds from the 2013 Spirit Fest on September 21st.
